I have SQL Server Developer edition on my laptop. Want to install MSDE on
same laptop (so VB .NET 2003 will work.
Any issues here with two versions/inmstances of "SQL Server" on same box?

Hi Robby,
I have never tried it myself, but I *think* that it should work. Though
I can imagine your poor laptop having a hard time, attempting to serve
two memory-intensive applications. :-)
For a more authorative answer, I suggest you repeat your question in
microsoft.public.sqlserver.msde, or microsoft.public.sqlserver.setup.
This group (microsoft.public.sqlserver.mseq) is actually about English
Query, so most MSDE and setup experts don't hang around here.
Best, Hugo

MSDE 2GB Limit
Hi
A Client has an MSDE install - checked by running @.@.version (clearly
says developer edition in the result text).
However the size of the data file is over 3GB, even allowing for empty
spaces the amount of data far exceeds 2GB. Pls explain?
The database was filled by regular insert statements.

MSDE always shows "Desktop Engine" and not "Developer Edition"!

MSDE 2000A EULA / SBS 2003 Web Edition
Hi. I'm a bit confused and wonder whether someone of you can give me some
more information on this.
The EULA for MSDE 2000A states that you cannot use MSDE for hosting
services. Does anyone know what this mean?
I'm running an ASP.Net application and would like to use MSDE as the backend
database. Does this fall into this category?
Or does it mean that if I'm an ISP, I'm not allowed to offer MSDE as a
feature on my hosting packages?
Also, it says that you're not allowed to install any applications on SBS
2003 Web Edition. Does MSDE fall into this category?
Thanks very much for your help!
Martin
Hi Martin,
If you plan on using Webserver I think you need the full version of SQL. As
for SBS webserver 2003 I think you mean Windows Webserver 2003, which is a
lower priced version of windows server with a limited feature set optimized
for webhosting and reducing the cost of server to make it more competitive
in that market place. If you are a programmer look into either the ISV
program or the Action pack program which will help you out with the software
required to setup the development environment.

MSDE 2000 Release A Supported systems
The addendum to the Readme file for MSDE 2000 Release A states "MSDE 2000 Release A is supported on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web Edition".
Does this mean that it executes only under Windows 2000 Server 2003 ?
I am running Windows 2000 Pro, it doesnt work. Does anyone run MSDE 2000 Rel A under other windows versions?

I think that extract shoul'd be intended as "Microsoft Windows Server 2003,

MSDE can be installed up to Win98 boxes, more system requirements at

MSDE 2000 and SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition Compatibility
Are there any compatibility issues between Microsoft SQL Desktop Edition and
SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition Compatibility.
I would like to install one packaged application that uses MSDE 2000 and a
second packaged application that uses SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition.
Both seem to be using MDAC 2.8
Thanks
I dont see that there is any problem as far as compatibility is concerned.

MSDE & Windows XP
I was wondering if I can install SQL Developers Edition over the MSDE?
I'm working for this guy and he has a database installed on Windows XP. I
think it's MSDE (we'll call it the1st computer), it had no interface. I
installed the SQL Developers Edition on another Windows XP (we'll call this
the 2nd computer) to manipulate the backup jobs. The nightly backups are
successful on the 1st computer. But on the 2nd computer I cannot get the
backup jobs to backup to drive C of the 2nd computer. In other words I can
only see the 1st computer drive C when I want to set up a backup job.
If the above is not clear, try reading below:
Here is what I want to achieve. Nightly backup onto the 2nd computer and
restore that data using a backup job. I know it's possible but here is my
problem. When set up a job to back up to the 2nd computer the job fails and
gives me Device is not available.
I tried sharing the folder
I tried sp_AddDevice
I tried hard coding the path and used the IP address.
Any suggestions.

yes, you can... up to 16 instances of different editions, at different
service pack levels can be technically installed on the same computer..
but only one of them can be the default instance, while all the others will
be named instances...

the windows account running 1st computer SQL Server Agent must have enought
privileges to handle 2nd computer file system...
so you have to provide a windows account who has been granted enought
privileges on both PCs...

Hello
How do you use Enterprise Manager in MSDE. I got the
version of MSDE from Office XP Professional edition.
AsifEnterprise manager is not shipped with MSDE . The SQL Server 2000 Desktop

msdbdata.mdf file is over 5 GB, cannot shrink it
I have problem with my sql server developer edition.
I began reciving alerts regarding disk space, and found out that the msdb files are 5 GB!!! the data file is full, so I cannot shrink it, but the table usage shows only a few MB used by tables.
its not advisable to shrink the system dbs except tempdb, but in your case just check if any user tables are created in msdb if so just delete the same to free diskspace.... then try shrinking msdb but b4 shrinking ensure you have the latest backup of all the dbs....|||
There are no user tables on this server.
It a local developer version, I use for development and small checks, there is no back up nither.

MSDB and PUBS Databases
We are running SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition on Windows 2003 Standard Server.
We setup a SQL backup to run under SQL. We got the messages in the report.
It said "backup cannot be performed on database 'msdb'. This subtask is
ignored." and "Backup cannot be performed on database 'pubs'. This subtask
is ignored". Is it necessary to backup msdb and pubs databases? Thanks.Hi Diane
My guess is that this error is occurring when you try to back up the
transaction log of these databases, as they are in simple mode and the log
cannot be backed up.
Pubs is a sample database used in the documentation examples, and can be
easily rebuilt. It should never need to be backed up at all. MSDB should be
backed up so you can restore information about your tasks, jobs, alerts and
backup history. But you may be backing up the full database already and it
may only be the log backup that is failing.

sample database, if you want to you can leave this out, as you can
download the creation script somewhere on the MSDN space of microsoft.

Under Database Maintenance, a complete backup runs once a week and
transaction backup runs everyday. You are right. The error message comes
from the transaction log history. Do you suggest that I ignore the error
messages since I have a complete backup runs every week? I will uncheck the
backup for the PUBS database.
Thanks.

Thanks.
Hi Diane
My guess is that this error is occurring when you try to back up the
transaction log of these databases, as they are in simple mode and the log
cannot be backed up.
Pubs is a sample database used in the documentation examples, and can be
easily rebuilt. It should never need to be backed up at all. MSDB should be
backed up so you can restore information about your tasks, jobs, alerts and
backup history. But you may be backing up the full database already and it
may only be the log backup that is failing.

Thanks.MSDB stores all you job as well as replication information, so backin
