MSDE 64-bit?

Hi there
Quick question.. can you get a 64-bit version of MSDE or do you need to
upgrade to SQL Server 2005 Express?

MSDE 2ksp3a TO SQL Server 2000, why is upgrade option disabled?

Hi,
I have latest version of MSDE on my win xp machine, I had installed a named version msde using the microsoft bootstrapper along with my application. During installation I had specified the datadir to be something like c:\program files\MyApp\Data
So far so good.
Now I am trying to install SQL Server 2000 dev edition on my computer and was hoping to upgrade this named instance of MSDE, but the upgrade option is disabled. All I can click on is "Create a new instance of SQL Server, or install Client Tools" and "Adv
anced options". Why is that. What am I missing. I read many times that upgrading named instance shouldn't be a problem.
I have to figure this out so that in future my client's can upgrade our MSDE named instance to SQL Server named instance if they need to..

|||You can't upgrade MSDE to Developer Edition, you can only upgrade to SQL
Server 2000 Enterprise Edition or SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition.

Hi
A Client has an MSDE install - checked by running @.@.version (clearly
says developer edition in the result text).
However the size of the data file is over 3GB, even allowing for empty
spaces the amount of data far exceeds 2GB. Pls explain?
The database was filled by regular insert statements.

MSDE 2000 which version to use?

Hi,
I'm planning to develop a VB.NET application using MSDE but came across
these sites... so I'm sort of confused which version of MSDE 2000 to use.

1. What's the difference between these two MSDE 2000?
2. Which one to use for development? (VB.NET)
3. Which one to re-distribute with my custom application?
I was thinking that I have to use the 70MB MSDE file. BUT after comparing
the dates, I'm a bit confused. The 70MB file is older.

the final result, after installation, is actually the same... both install
MSDE at the 3a service pack level..
but there's both a technical and an EULA difference..
MSDE Web Release A can only install fresh instances of MSDE 2000, while the
other package can both install new fresh instances and upgrad existing
instance at the service pack 3a level
as regard the EULA, the second package must be licensed by an appropriate
license of Visual Studio, Fox Pro, MSDN, SQL Server and so on, while MSDE
release A is really free for download, and you only have to register for
redistribution rights if you want to at

all right, see the 320873 article from microsoft's knowledge base to
manually remove a msde. since you don't have msde installed anymore, looking
for the key in registry and delete them.
after that, try to install msde 2000 (not msde 2000 rel a) and sp3.

MSDE 2000 or SQL Server 2005 Express (Beta) for new project?

Hello guys! I have to develop a new web based project. It's a webportal for events. At the moment it's runnung on an Access database.The new version should be running on a SQL server - the desicion is:MSDE 2000 or SQL Server 2005 Express (Beta). What do you recommend? Thewebpages are developed under .NET 1.1.
SQL Server 2005 Express is not going to be as stable and is not aproven technology as is MSDE. But if your release date somewhatdistant (several months), you may want to use it (hopefully the RTMversion will be relased before you finish.) You'll still be anearly adopter, though, and may have to deal with bugs. In theend, it's a question of: What features do you need in Express that MSDEdoesn't provide? And do these features counter-balance the issuesof working with a beta?
|||Well ... it's a company philosophy to work always on the newsestplattform. If you are common with the MSDE and the SQL Express 2005edition you can surly say if there are some performance improvements.The project leaders think that the MSDE version is not so fast. Specialfeatures are not requested, only SQL querys and stored procedures (...and performance ). Is a change of database engine (from MSDEto SQL 2005) a problem in the future?

Here my first look at SQL Server 2005, an events web site needs Time Interval, it is built in SQL server 2005 and index Column include without Composite index. It also schreds and decomposes XML native. Hope this helps.

First look at SQL Server 2005 development. Comments appreciated.

MSDE 2000 and x64 (WinXP 64 Bit)

Hi,
I do have MSDE 2000 (sr 3a) installed on a 64bit version of WinXP (x64).
Installation worked ok. Selfwritten client-code works ok with a 32bit
application in WOW. So far so good.
Then I ported my client code to native 64bit...compiled ok...but the
64bit-client can not connect to local MSDE desktop engine...connection to a
remote server works ok.
The OLEDB provider for SQLServer is 64bit...I've checked that. Error code
that I get is:
"[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access
denied."
Authentification is "integrated" and works in a 32bit-client. So should work
in a 64bit-client, too. Right? What am I doing wrong?

|||Thanks! That did the trick. There were no activated server-protocols
(TCP/IP, Named Pipes, etc.). So I assume the 64bit-client tried to connect
through "shared memory"-access which obviously won't work with a 64bit-client.
Now the 64bit-client connects to the server through loopback interface which
I originally don't wanted but it works for now.
By the way: I am using your DbaMgr tool...it's great!

SQL Server across the internet? Ignoring firewalls (server was placed
outside firewall to see if thats where the connection problem was)
We get the 'SQL Server does not exist or access denied
ConnectionOpen(Connect())' error when trying to connect to a clients
database on their server over the internet. However, everything looks
ok and I can vpn into their machine and connect to the server using
enterprise manager on a terminal service session on their servers.
This in itself is a pain and we would rather have their server
registered in our enterprise manager.
Does the same answer apply if the server was an installation of SQL

Yes. Note that MSDE doesn't by default listen to any netlibs. If you can
connect to the same MSDE after VPN, then this shouldn't be an issue. I
suggest you, on the client, make sure that TCP IP is at the top of the list
in Client Network Utility. Also try connecting using IP address. And as for
port numbers,
The IP netlib uses 1433 for a default instance.
The IP netlib uses 1434 for the port resolution query and whatever the
instance picked at the first startup for the actual data traffic.

tryng to connect from another machine across the internet, with little
success, thats why I asked.
Do you have any other ideas why we wouldnt be able to register their
server in enterprise manager?
I can only register it in enterprise manager on the terminal server box,

MSDE doesn't listen to any netlibs by default. Apart from that and the

services. BUT, When I log on terminal services and have a look at the
properties of the server (terminal services enterprise manager) it says
tcpip is enabled. Does this mean that this library is available and
SHOULD work across the internet?

MSDE & SQLV6.5

Looking for support on a simple issue. I want to place an application
using latest version of MSDE onto a server that already has an
application runnign with a full version of SQL V6.5.
What will happen? Will the latest version of MSDE overwrite the V6.5
installation? Ideally I think I would like to have both MSDE SQL2000
and SQL V6.5 co-exist on the server so that my application does not
interfere with the existing application using V6.5; is this possible?
Apologies is this post is short on detail but MSDE is new to me!

Hi,
No problems. Both can co-exists in same server.
While installing the MSDE, give a instance name. This will create a new
named instance of SQL Server MSDE with out interrupting or overwriting the
SQL 6.5.
FYI, both SQL 6.5 and MSDE can run in parallel with out any issues.

However, does what you are saying apply to all versions of MSDE? We
are trying to install V2000 Rel. A over an existing version of
standard V6.5 eithout any service packs. The install of MSDE will not
complete and rolls back before completing the install. Have you any
ideas?

I intend using MSDE 2000 in conjunction with a fully licensed version of SQL
Server 2000. MSDE will be installed on several clients.
My understanding is as follows :
I can use Enterprise Manager on any or all of those client instances of MSDE
because I have a fully licensed copy of SQL Server 2000 with which they will
be replicating.
MSDN:
You can only use SQL Server tools and services in conjunction with MSDE if
you acquired MSDE through SQL Server 2000 (Developer Edition, Standard
Edition, or Enterprise Edition), and if you are using MSDE in conjunction
with a properly licensed copy of SQL Server 2000.
Am I in the clear?
Can I use any of the GUI tools?

I had a private conversation with Steve some time ago about this matter...
he is not a "legal" guy too... but he has been told by legal representatives
that EM (QA and so on) is not legitimated to be used against production MSDE
instances... this is the reason he posted that way...
so, in my understanding, you never (or quite never, but I do really have no
idea when it could be legal) are legitimated to use SQL Server Client Tools
to manage MSDE...

I followed the link you mentioned and on that page was directed to the
following site:

which states :
If you have an existing machine with SQL Server client tools installed, you
can manage the MSDE instance through these... as long as you have a valid and
legal Client Access License (CAL).
You can take the SQL Server install CD, run it on the client(s), and choose
"Install client tools only" during setup. This will install Query Analyzer,
Enterprise Manager, and other useful tools—but will not install the database
engine.
This was my understanding.
With a fully licensed MSSQL 2000 you can legally use the client tools on
MSDE 2000 clients?

I had a private conversation with Steve some time ago about this matter...
he is not a "legal" guy too... but he has been told by legal representatives
that EM (QA and so on) is not legitimated to be used against production MSDE
instances... this is the reason he posted that way...
so, in my understanding, you never (or quite never, but I do really have no
idea when it could be legal) are legitimated to use SQL Server Client Tools
to manage MSDE...

MSDE & EM Tools

Hi,
I intend using MSDE 2000 in conjunction with a fully licensed version of SQL
Server 2000. MSDE will be installed on several clients.
My understanding is as follows :
I can use Enterprise Manager on any or all of those client instances of MSDE
because I have a fully licensed copy of SQL Server 2000 with which they will
be replicating.
MSDN:
You can only use SQL Server tools and services in conjunction with MSDE if
you acquired MSDE through SQL Server 2000 (Developer Edition, Standard
Edition, or Enterprise Edition), and if you are using MSDE in conjunction
with a properly licensed copy of SQL Server 2000.
Am I in the clear?
Can I use any of the GUI tools?

MSDE - Unknown Server

Hello,
I installed software called AutoAPP on a users desktop and this software
automatically installs MSDE (No idea what version). When run under the
administrator account everything is fine. When the user logs on under their
account (power user) SQL Icon is on the task bar, but it is blank \\ -
Unknown Server. I have to manually type in the laptop name in the server
field of the SQL Server Service Manager and then the arrow will go green.
Does anyone know why under Administrator account the server name is there,
but not under the users profile? It is annoying having to type in the
computer each time the computer reboots, giving the user Administrative
access to their computer is not really an option. Once the computer name is
entered under the user account everything seems to function normally.
Laptop is running Windows XP Pro SP1

I uninstalled everything, but once I reinstall I will check under the
Services and Applications -> Services to make sure it is running. I'm
almost positive it is running and the Service manager does load on boot up,
but the circle will not have the green arrow. If I open the Service Manager
the drop down for the Server field will be empty. I type in the name of the
local comptuer i.e. laptop1 and it arrow goes green and the application can
access the database. It is just annoying to have to type in the computer
name each time. I will very 100% for sure if the service is running in the
next day or so, once I get a chance to work on the users laptop again.

MSDE - list databases, describe tables, migrate from Access?

I am new to SQL Server but have been using Access for a while. I just
installed MSDE (latest version) to evaluate it for use in small business
systems rather than Access peer-to-peer. Just a few quick questions:
1) I can connect to MSDE from an Access db by linking, but I think I am
doing this through ODBC (using the link table wizard in Access). Is this
the correct way?
2) In goofing around I used 'osql' to do a bunch of create table and insert
statements to create some test data but I didn't save these statements. Now
I can't see how to get the list of databases, tables, and columns that I
created. Is there anything like 'show databases', 'show tables', or
'describe <tablename>' that will output a description of what I've created?
3) Is there any simple way to take a database created in MS-Access and
convert it to SQL Server format? I.e. can I create my tables in Access's
nice user interface and then move them over to MSDE?

-- To display list of databases
1>sp_databases (enter)
2>go (enter)
-- To list the tables in a database

1>sp_tables (enter)
2>go (enter)
-- To see the table structure
1>use dbname (enter)
2>go (enter)
1>sp_help table_name (enter)

This list goes on and on... See books online for moredetails on the SQL
Server TSQL commands.
3. Use can use DTS , but DTS wont be coming with MSDE. Other approaches
are manual.
