MSDE and Installshield

I need a better installation procedure for my software, so I wanted to merge
the MSDE install into the main one. At the moment the Setup has been built
by a third part developer, who use Installshiled.
Problem is, he doesn't know which version of Installshield he needs. Someone
can give me a hint?

From what I read, InstallShield 7 should be alright; maybe even 6.
Not related to MSDE, I am struggling with it, though: I am unable to
create simple Upgrade packages that replace a couple of files in an
installation. something that InnoSetup and InstallShield 5 do perfectly
well.

|||When I last spoke to them, the installshield guys didn't have the bootstrapper out for MSDE. They still had the merge modules but be warned microsoft does not want you to continue that route. I even spoke with WISE Solutions and they also mentioned that
they were working on replacing the merge module for MSDE.. so something to keep in mind.

Sorry, I got lost.
Our product must be a self-easy-installing one. I have no experience about
Installations packages, and the (external)guy who must build it needs
directions from me, as he have never installed MSDE before.
We need a tight integration between the two -installshield and MSDE- 'cause
in case of errors we need the installation to halt and report the error,
while now it simply goes on...
So, is there a simply solution? What are the methods commonly used for this?

If the Inno guys say it will fly, I have no reason to doubt them. They aren't
trying to sell me something - the beauty of open source software.

MSDE and installing MS SQL server 2000

Sorry if this is a stupid question , i'm a newbie to SQL server and MSDE. I
read the installation manual but couldn't find the answer:-;
Question:
I've a server running MSDE latest patches etc.
I just purchaced MS SQL server 2000 standaard edition.
Does the installation of MS sql 2000 server takes care of copying and using
the old MSDE database(s)?
There is one application using MSDE with MSSQLSERVER as named instance, I

Or do i need to desintall MSDE?

SQL Server standard edition Installation will not copy the existing
databases. Databases
you need to copy manually.
Easy approach is:-
1. Install SQL 2000 with same service pack in new machine as old
2. Stop MSSQL Server and SQL Agent service is Old server as well as in new
server
3. Copy MDF and LDF files to the new server (Incluing system databases -
Master, msdb, tempdb, model),
It is a must that you should copy the folders to same folders
as in old server
4. Start MSSQl Server service in new server
5. Login to Query Analyzer in new machine and change the SQL server name
select @.@.servername
-- The name should be old server name
Execute below script to change the server name, this step is no required
if you do not want to change server name.
sp_dropserver <servername>
go
sp_addserver <newserver_name>,local
6. Stop and start MSSQL Server and SQl agent service. Login to Enterprise
manager and see whether all your databases are up.
Note:
Ensure that you install the new SQL server with the same directory structure
as old and copy the MDF and LDF to the same folders. otherwise the database
will not come online.

MSDE 2000a installation failure on XP Pro

Hi,
Everyone know why MSDE 2000a is refusing to load on a XP Pro wiht Office SBS installed on it. It seems to have MSDE already but the default instance isn't accessible so I tried to install under another instance name. I have set the SA password.
File and print sharing is installed and running (I think). I'm able to share out folders.
Any suggestions?

MSDE 2000 SP3 fails to install

MSDE 2000 SP3 fails to install on a windows 2000 terminal server. The error
message I get is "MSDE 200 SP3 installation failed with exit code 1603" and
“A strong password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch
to supply the same. Refer to read me for more details. Setup will now exit.”
I have come across this once before and removed the server from the domain,
in this case that is not an option. I have denied the read right to the
default domain policy which is the only policy that is applying. Anybody have
any ideas on how I can install this.

as indicated by the error description, you have to provide a strong password
for "sa" login as a parameter, in the form of
c:\...\>setup.exe ... SAPWD="your strong password" ...
all available parameters for the setup.exe bootstrap installer are provided

version is not listed. That's why I am wondering if MSDE can be installed on
it, since it fails when I tried. I want to know if this is the reason for
this failure.

try install previuos version of msde 2000 rel a, and update with sp3.

MSDE 2000 mulituser on a single computer

The installation works fine, when I restarted the machine and login as an
administrator it works fine...
But when I logon as a normal user (whitout administravie rights) its no fun
anymore.
The "SQL Server Service Manager" is blank (no server or services), but I can
fill the fields with values and the service is started but they disappear
when i restart the machine, and the MSSQLSERVER service IS started!?!
But when I enable NetworkProtocols (with "Svrnetcn.exe") it works fine for
all...
Is there any other way to solve the problem?
Where can I find Microsofts documentation about this?

I'm not sure this is the solution, but you may give it a try:
Stop all services that might interfere with MSDE or the performace counters.
- Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
- Performance Monitor
- Monitoring services like Surveyor or NetIQ
- Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC)
- Microsoft Search (MSSearch)
- Internet Information Services (IIS)
- WnsService (This service corresponds to the Canon printer driver.)
- Third-party performance monitor utilities that load performance counters.
- Antivirus programs.
In the "setup.ini".

|||I have tried every resolutions found on the website and it was still not
installing.
I've always set the lanaguage for non Unicode programs to chinese( Hong
Kong) to be able to display chinese character in the system natively. I have
specified the collation to Latin1_General in order for the setup to start but
the installation was never successful.
After switching the language back to English(United States), MSDE installed
fine.
Now my question is if I switch the language back to Chinese(Hong Kong),
would that mess up the MSDE install.

MSDE 2000 installation on XP

We're having trouble installing MSDE 2000 on two machines here. They were Win98, upgraded to XP Professional using the upgrade CD labelled 'version 2002'. If we run MSDE installation the routine goes virtually to the end, then the progress bar runs backwards down to zero and the product is not installed. As an experiment we installed XP Pro from a full install (as opposed to upgrade) CD and then ran the MSDE installation, and it worked just fine on the same machine. Problem is we've sold these as XP Pro upgrades and so we don't have keys to install full version for the customer. The verbose log informs me that the installation failed but not clearly why (there's almost 3.5Mb of it).

I realise this might not be enough for anyone to help, but I was hoping that the reverse progress bar might be something someone else has experienced. The machines are Celeron 700 or 766, one has 64Mb the other has 128Mb, 20Gb HDDs with plenty (>18Gb) available. All ideas greatly appreciated.The following article addresses your issue:

We have found that when a user upgrades from 98/ME to XP. the performance counters get messed up. Once the counters are gone, MSDE will not go on. Running this command reset the counters thereby allowing MSDE to be installed.|||I got past the install after running the LODCTR command and then enabling File and Print Sharing. THANK you guys for all the help .

Hi,
I have Installed MSDE 2000 on Windows 98 SE box After REBOOT MSDE
service is running.
I am not able to connect to the MSDE in WIndows Authentication mode
while using Login ( sa ) / password the connectivity is done.
My GUI uses the MSDE connection in "Windows Authentication Mode" which
is working fine with the 2K/XP but not with 98SE/ME.
The MSDE Readme.txt says that on 98 / ME the default Connectivity mode
is "Windows Authentication" BUT its not working in that way.
I have tried SECURITYMODE=SQL as command line to setup.exe as well but
results are same.
Any clue to run it in WMA Mode on Win98SE/ME ?

Hi Kaps,
Win98 doesn't provide the infrastructure that MSDE needs to use Windows
Authentication. You will need to use SQL Server authentication and specify
an password for sa (SAPWD) while installing it.

Installation of MSDE 2000 fails on 64-bit Windows Vista (Build 5308).

The error message is "Setup failed to configure the server.Please refer the error logs for more information". No error log can be found on the machine at the time of installation. Please let me know if anyone else has encountered this problem?

MSDE 2000 installation

Hi,
I'm creating an install disk that our company is distributing to a selected
group of our immediate direct customers. We are using the SQL server database
in house and we are creating a program that these customers can enter
contract data at their own PC, print the data in a report format and then
send us the contracts with the remittance report. We are developing an
executable program that uses a SQL server database with 6 tables in house.
I'm using installshield to create a disc that the user will load onto their
own PC. We want to be able to populate these tables by having the user's log
onto our web site and doing a update for the latest table updates. So far
I've been pursuing the idea of using MSDE 2000 for the user's PC's, however,
is this the wisest decision. Would it be better (simpler) to use a different
database on the user's PC's and use a driver to import data from our SQL
server tables to the database on the PC. If MSDE 2000 is the best bet, where
does MDAC version 2.6 come in the picture or does it. I know this is fairly
lengthy message, but I could use some direction on this
MSDE is an alternative for MS Access. It is more robust and can scale up to
SQL Server SE or EE. It has royalty free re-distribution rights; however,
the caveat is that you can not use the SQL Server Administrative tools. You
must code your own administrative features into your application yourself.
It can be more complex; however, it may be worth your time.
MDAC automatically gets installed when you install MSDE onto the client.

I'm creating an install disk that our company is distributing to a selected
group of our immediate direct customers. We are using the SQL server
database
in house and we are creating a program that these customers can enter
contract data at their own PC, print the data in a report format and then
send us the contracts with the remittance report. We are developing an
executable program that uses a SQL server database with 6 tables in house.
I'm using installshield to create a disc that the user will load onto their
own PC. We want to be able to populate these tables by having the user's log
onto our web site and doing a update for the latest table updates. So far
I've been pursuing the idea of using MSDE 2000 for the user's PC's, however,
is this the wisest decision. Would it be better (simpler) to use a different
database on the user's PC's and use a driver to import data from our SQL
server tables to the database on the PC. If MSDE 2000 is the best bet, where
does MDAC version 2.6 come in the picture or does it. I know this is fairly
lengthy message, but I could use some direction on this

|||I have MSDE and SQL Server running on an AMD 64 bit processor without
issue. Ignore the "Pentium" term when reviewing Microsoft system
requirrements. Just make sure clock speeds are compatible. Microsoft
has always recommended Intel products. Back handers paradise!!!!

I am new to MSDE. Not MS-SQL server was installed in this desktop before. I have downloaded MSDERelA and installed it using the command line prompt. I can not the see the SQLServer programs under Start/Programs menu. What am I doing wrong? Should I be
installing a different program instead of MSDE2000RelA? Please help. Thank you.
MSDE doesn't have a graphical user interface and it doesn't create any menu
items in the Start/Programs menu. You can check if MSDE is installed by
looking in Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs.

I checked as you suggested and saw that MSDE is installed. Where would I find the free version of graphical user interface that will work with MSDE? Do I need to remove MSDE to install the GUI?

based GUI from Microsoft, www.microsoft.com/sql look for the SQL Server Web
Data Administrator. There are also a host of free tools available from other
source, just try Google.

I installed the SQL Server Web Data Administrator. The installation never asked for my userid and password. When try to login what userid/pw should I be using?. I tried my windows login and pw and it did not work. Then i tried sa as userid and AStrong
SAPwd as password, did not work it either. I tried both windows authenticate mode and sql mode. The server is (local).
