MSDE 2000 installation fails on Windows Vista 64-bit

Installation of MSDE 2000 fails on 64-bit Windows Vista (Build 5308).

The error message is "Setup failed to configure the server. Please refer the error logs for more information". No error log can be found on the machine at the time of installation. Please let me know if anyone else has encountered this problem?

Is it possible to install MSDE 2000 on 64-bit Windows Vista(Build 5308)?

Thanks in advance.

I don't believe any version of SQL Server or MSDE prior to SQL Server 2005 is supported on Vista. Someone else on the team who works on SQL Server 2000 should reply with a definitive answer...

MSDE

We are running MSDE on Windows 2000 Server. The version number SQL2000,
8.00.760, 5.2 (Build 3790:SP1). So, I am running SP3. Is it necessary to
apply SP3a? If it is, is the "SP3a" file the same running on both SQL 2000
and MSDE? Thanks. It says here its not necessary unless you want the new "disable network
protocols" option.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en
Also note SP4 is available.

Do I need to apply SP3a first before applying SP4 or I can apply SP4 without
applying SP3a first? Thanks.

fixes that are in earlier service packs, together with any new fixes. You do
not have to install an earlier service pack before you install the latest
one.

msdb restore

I have a client who is trying to restore an old backup of
the msdb database. Of course, their new build of SQL is
different, so they can't do the restore. We get an error
similar to:
"Server: Msg 3168, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The backup of the system database on device
d:\temp\master.bak cannot be restored because it was
created by a different version of the server (134217904)
than this server (134217920).
Server: Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. "
what I need to know is how to interpret the version number
in the error message - i.e. "134217904" so I can figure
out what version they need to have running in order to
restore. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!Take a look at Q264474. That will help you :-)

was taken from:
RESTORE HEADERONLY
FROM DISK = 'd:\temp\master.bak '
You can look at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=264474 for further
information.
