msde 2000 sp4 - configuration failed

There is a bugfix in sp4 that I need for a customer machine. I have
been unsuccesful in getting service pack 4 installed on a test machine.
configuration:
windows 2000, msde 2000 sp2
setup command line:
setup /upgradesp sqlrun SECURITYMODE=SQL
UPGRADEUSER=myadminacct UPGRADEPWD=mypassword /L*v
C:\MSDELog.log
The setup runs for a couple minutes, then dialog progress bar winds
down. I have a 3.7 MB log, at the end I have:

After this happens, sqlserver agent will no longer start. I re-imaged
the machine and ran it again with the same result.
Anyone else have similar problems installing sp4? Anyone have a
solution?

Thanks for the "value 3" tip. This was some problem with the account
that sqlserveragent and mssqlserver were running under. Changed to
LocalSystem and installation succeeded.

msde 2000 on windows 2003 server

I "Managed" to install msde on windows 2003 server but the sql service manager does list an thing to connect to.
what am i doing wrong does mdse work on windows 2003 server and how do i fix it ?

SYMPTOMS
If you configure an instance of SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2000 Desktop
Engine (also known as MSDE 2000) to disallow network connections, that
instance will not appear in the SQL Server 2000 Service Manager utility.
CAUSE
The SQL Server ODBC driver does not return instance names to the SQL
Service Manager if the instance does not support network connections.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, stop and then start the service for the
instance by following these steps:
Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
Double-click Services and Applications in the left-hand screen.
Double-click Services.
Right-click the service for the instance of SQL Server. The name of the
service for a default instance of SQL Server 2000 is MSSQLServer. The name
of the service for a named instance of SQL Server 2000 is
MSSQL$instancename.
Click the action that you want applied to the instance, such as stop or
start.

MSDE 2000 do not listen

Hi all,
I install MSDE with SP3a on my server. The service starts well and with the
local host I'm able to access the MSDE server, but if I want to access it
from another workstation the connection always failed. I troubleshoot the
problem and I found that MSDE 2000 doesn't listen on the port 1433. Why?
There is a way to enable MSDE listening on TCP 1433 port and accept
connection form other client?

YanickIn the default configuration of MSDE TCP/IP as a server network library is
disabled. There is a utility, svrnetcn.exe, that can be used to enable it.
The utility is installed with MSDE so it shoulb be on the computer. Search
for this file and open it. You should tehn be able to enable TCP/IP.

MSDE (SQL 2000) Full Service Pack 1 (2)

I need the full Service Pack 1 (or 2) MSDE Installation files to include in an Installer. I am not interested in upgrading current MSDE RTM installs but rather need to install an MSDE SP1 (2) Instance on the client machines. I found a lot of places to get the files but the weird thing is in the supposed MSDE SP2 download files (SQL2KDeskSP2.exe) the sample.msi and samplupgr.msi files are missing that are the templates to be used to create the unique (GUID) MSI installation files for MSDE. Microsoft highly recommends creating the unique MSI files to ensure a previous instance did not use an MSI file with the same GUID.

The SQL2KDeskSP2.exe does include the SQLRUN01.MSI SQLRUN16.MSI files, but nowhere does it say you can use one of these files as a template and change the GUID internally using ORCA and VC++.

Are we supposed to use the old sample and sampleupg.msi files with SP2 .. but use all the other Install files for SP 1 (2) ?

Please excuse my ignorance of the "Windows Installer" software.

Billy MatlockI have been able to get the full sql server sp1 files using msdn subscriber download. I think you have to order a cd if you do not have an msdn subscription.

I have not found a full desktop download for sp2 - although the page that announced the availability of sp2 implied that it would be in the subscriber downloads and that was a while ago.

I have written an SQL Server 2000 Application using the
indexing service for full-text indexing a table. Try to
use MSDE instead of Sql Server
(SQLDMO) oSQLServer.FullTextService.isFullTextInstalled
returns always false
Has anyone an idea what to do?

98, Windows NT Workstation, or Windows 2000 Professional clients, these

MSDE - MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ ?

I need to work with MSDE on a new laptop ive been given. Apparently msde is already installed. I have a service runningnamed "MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ" - how do i configure it, or shouldI just download a later copy of msde and setup a new copy ? Iknow I know...use sql express. However, I need to work with msdein this case to make it easier (on me) for moving the data into a sql2000 database.

So you have SQL2000 instance? Then you can register the MSDE instance in Enterprise Manager, thus it should be much easier to manage the MSDE databases: Open Enterprise Manager->right click a SQL Server Group->choose New SQL Server Registration.

Otherwise you have to use osql utility to manage MSDE, which would be painful if you're not familiar with T-SQL.

Trying to install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 on Win XP machine.
MSDE 2000 Sp3 already installed on D: drive, instance name= db1
In enterprise manager the db appears as ABC-111\DB1
ABC-111 is the name of the machine
I am using mixed authentication mode.
After reading the help I came up with this to install sp4:
setup /upgradesp sqlrun instancename="db1" securitymode=sql upgradeuser=sa
upgradepwd=sapw /L*v C:\MSDELog.log
I have also tried having instancename="ABC-111\DB1" but always the same error:
This product is not installed. Check is a appropriate instance of MSDE is
installed.
Now, note that the MSDE is installed here on my machine:
D:\Program Files\MSDE\MSSQL$DB1
Could that possible affect this?
I noticed when I looked in the registry that I did not find what the readme
file described, still, the database has been running smoothly for months...
Any hints somebody?
