MSDE 2000

Hi, I have been working with SQL 2000. I recently have a small project to d
o
and it requires getting data from the Access database. I tried using the
Access as my database but found it very difficult to use, maybe it's becuase
I'm more used to SQL server. The customers mostly won't have SQL server so
I
thought maybe I'll try the MSDE 2000. I saw 2 versio of this at the MS
download center. One's title says MSDE for Visual Studio.net devloper (I us
e
C# for the application development), Publish date of 8/21/2003. The other
one's title is MSDE 2000 relase A, Publish date of 10/29/2003.
Can someone tell me which one I should down load? Should I down load the
first one to my PC for development purpose and then the 2nd to the customer
pC ? Or should I just download the 2nd one which has the latest publish dat
e?
Thanks,

MSDE 1.0 licensing confusion

Hi all. I'm working on my first database project. I could use someone's knowledge and help on the specifics of using MSDE 1.0 legally. I've been reading up on this subject extensively, and I still can't figure out a clear answer.
I volunteer at a hospital and am writing a patient/physical therapist appointment scheduling program for a department. The department doesn't want to spend anything in terms of licensing for this project. I'm thinking of using Access 2000 and MSDE 1.0 a
s a solution since "Office 2000 Professional/Standard Edition" installations are already available on a few machines in the department and I don't want to get stuck with an older technology like Jet and/or DAO (want this program to be scalable in case SQL
Server is an option in the future). Estimated concurrent users is between 2 and 4 people.
Is it legal for me to write write an Access 2000/VBA front end, have it used by a few users with Access 2000 on their machines, and have MSDE as the database server on a single machine without paying for any further licenses and fees? Or am I stuck using
Jet if I want a free solution?
I read that "Office 2000 Developer Edition" (which is not available to me) is needed in order to redistribute MSDE 1.0. I don't understand what "redistribute" means in this case. I also read that MSDE 1.0 can be used by any owner of an Office 2000 licen
se that includes it. The information I've read on various websites about the licensing is sometimes contradictory, and I don't understand the wording on Microsoft's site.
Somebody, please give me the benefit of your knowledge.

Hi,
It IS legal for you to write an Access 2000/VBA front end, have it used by
a few users with Access 2000 on their machines (Provided they have ms
access), and have MSDE as the database server on a single machine without
paying for any further licenses and fees
You can download MSDE 2000 for free from the SQL Server Website and
redistribute it.
Download it from http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/do...s/download.asp

If you don't wish to get stuck with older technology, don't install MSDE
1.0. MSDE 2.0 is now "free" and is a significant upgrade from 1.0. It would
make a fine "server" for your 2 to 4 people.

MSDE 1 or MSDE 2K ?

I want to experiment a little bit with the MSDE. I'll be working with
it strictly from Visual Basic 6.
I have both versions of MSDE available for installation (on
Windows2K). Which one should I use?

as MSDE 1.0 is base on SQL Server 2000 and is currently only in maintenance,
I'd stick with the live one, MSDE 2000, which is full supported and is
plenty of new features with regards to the SQL Server 7.0 code base...

MSDE + SSL

Hi!
I had a working Win2003 server with Backup Exec 9.1 and Exchange 2003 OWA.
I installed SP1 for Win2003, WSUS and I created a certificate for OWA with
help from SelfSSL.
After this, I cant start my Backup Exec services, complaining about some SSL
error:
SSL Security error
ConnectionOpen (SECDoHandshake()).
and
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (SECDoHandshake()).]SSL Security error.
I think all this is a problem with SSL and MSDE.
Veritas says "talk to Microsoft" and gues what MS says...
What does SelfSSL to do with MSDE? Or what shoult I do to make MSDE (8.0)
run nice beside SSL for our OWA access.
Thanks!

MSDE & Windows XP

I was wondering if I can install SQL Developers Edition over the MSDE?
I'm working for this guy and he has a database installed on Windows XP. I
think it's MSDE (we'll call it the1st computer), it had no interface. I
installed the SQL Developers Edition on another Windows XP (we'll call this
the 2nd computer) to manipulate the backup jobs. The nightly backups are
successful on the 1st computer. But on the 2nd computer I cannot get the
backup jobs to backup to drive C of the 2nd computer. In other words I can
only see the 1st computer drive C when I want to set up a backup job.
If the above is not clear, try reading below:
Here is what I want to achieve. Nightly backup onto the 2nd computer and
restore that data using a backup job. I know it's possible but here is my
problem. When set up a job to back up to the 2nd computer the job fails and
gives me Device is not available.
I tried sharing the folder
I tried sp_AddDevice
I tried hard coding the path and used the IP address.
Any suggestions.

yes, you can... up to 16 instances of different editions, at different
service pack levels can be technically installed on the same computer..
but only one of them can be the default instance, while all the others will
be named instances...

the windows account running 1st computer SQL Server Agent must have enought
privileges to handle 2nd computer file system...
so you have to provide a windows account who has been granted enought
privileges on both PCs...

MSDE & SQL2000

I am developing a Crystal Reports App in VS2005 (VB). I was originally working on an XP machine with MSDE and stored procedures where it worked fine.

I then transferred the development to a Win2003 machine with SQL2000 and am now getting the following error;

Failed to open a rowset. Description: 'Get_Calls_By_MLO_Date' expects parameter '@.DT1' which was not supplied. Plus some other error detail.

Here is the SP.

CREATE PROCEDURE Get_Calls_By_MLO_By_Date
@.DT1 datetime,
@.DT2 datetime
AS
SELECT MLO, CallNo, DT, Type FROM Actions
WHERE dt >= @.DT1 AND dt <= @.DT2 AND ActionID=1ORDER BY MLO, DT
GO

If I transfer everything back to the XP machine it works fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Terry.

How did you call the stored procedure that causes the error?|||

Hi,

It's called from the Crystal Report object. The function below accepts 2 parameters; 1. The report viewer and 2. (optional) a hashtable with the key/value pairs being the parameter info e.g. Key=@.DT1, Value = 13/01/2006 12:00:01 AM

As I mentioned in the original post, this works fine on the XP box but not the Win2003. The are a number of reports; some accept parameters (all of which appear to fail with the same error) and others that don't, all of which work as expected. Other than the OS, and SQL as opposed to MSDE the only other differerence I can think of is the copy of VS2005.

Thanks.

you can only install SQL Server 2000 Developer edition, Personal Edition and
MSDE, on Windows clients platforms... the Standard and Enterprise edition
are only for server platforms...
as long as you install a supported version, you only have to specify a named
instance installation, as your pc already hosts a default instance.
you can have different service pack levels (never tried different localized
versions, but may be =;-D), but the shared binaries in \Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80 folders will be updated at the highes
installed service pack level.
at the moment there's no SQL Server service pack 3 installation, you have to
install the RTM and apply the desired service pack

MSDE

I would appreciate any help, I'm trying to connect a web front-end to an
Access 2000 database using MSDE, and I have it working using Jet but would
like to connect the database using MSDE.
I would appreciate any advice to where I need to edit the code, the code is
as follows: (which is setup for Jet at present)
<%@. Language=VBScript %>
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Add New Record</TITLE>
<%
strDBPath=server.MapPath("Employer.mdb")
Set Conn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
Conn.Open "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & strDBPath & ";"

As mentioned I would be very grateful for any advice.

What you'll need to do is grant permissions for the login you are
using in MSDE to the database, and then create a connection string
that contains valid credentials. For connection string syntax
examples, see either one of these two sites:

JoanneConn.Open "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & strDBPath &
";"

see
http://www.able-consulting.com/MDAC...Providers.htm#O
LEDBProviderForSQLServer

The code would be better with just an insert statement.
Even better calling a stored procedure with parameters.

Now, this sounds a bit funny to me. I've heard of people access SQL Server
databases from Access, but you want to do it the other way round from
you ASP code? (I assume what you post is ASP, but I don't know ASP, so
I could be wrong.) That does not seem very meaningful to me.

However, assuming that you in fact have a copy of the database that
you have migrated to SQL Server, then you could do:

> strDBPath=server.MapPath("Employer.mdb")

Remove this:

> Conn.Open "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & strDBPath &
> ";"

Replace with:

Provider=SQLOLEDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=Employer

This assumes that you have MSDE running on the local server. If you
have MSDE on another machine, you should add Server=SERVERNAME to
the connection string.

MSDb and Master maintenance

Using the Database Maintenenace Plan Wizard I set up
maintenance plans for each of the databases on my MS SQL
Server. This is working fine except for the "msdb"
and "master" databases. For these I get the following
errors. What am I doing wrong?
Microsoft (R) SQLMaint Utility (Unicode), Version Logged
on to SQL Server 'EPDDOCS3' as 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM'

** Execution Time: 0 hrs, 0 mins, 1 secs **
Backup can not be performed on database 'msdb'. This sub
task is ignored.
End of maintenance plan 'DB Maintenance Plan msdb' on
9/20/2004 8:00:02 AM
SQLMAINT.EXE Process Exit Code: 1 (Failed)

You probably try to do log backups. You can't do log backup on master. You can on model, but that is
overkill and would require setting it to full recovery mode. I suggest you create two plans, One in
which you do log backup, another in which you don't.
